Beyond the Diploma: A Roadmap for Aligning Classrooms, Counseling, and Careers to Improve CCR Outcomes
Monday June 15, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
Many career and college readiness efforts operate separately across classrooms, advising, and CTE programs, even though everyone shares the same goal of preparing students for life beyond graduation. This session provides a clear, practical approach to aligning those efforts and building a culture focused on student success.
If you serve as a…
  • CTE Educator: Discover how to intentionally align your CTE program with academic instruction and advising efforts to strengthen measurable CCR outcomes.
  • School Counselor: Learn practical strategies to integrate career advising into classroom experiences and expand your reach across the entire student body.
  • Administrator: Gain a clear alignment framework to strengthen school-wide CCR indicators and accountability systems.
This session introduces a practical alignment framework designed to help schools move from siloed efforts to shared ownership. Participants will explore how aligning advising structures, classroom instruction, pathway design, and workforce partnerships can:
  • Increase student clarity, motivation, and pathway ownership
  • Strengthen measurable College and Career Readiness outcomes
  • Improve graduation, persistence, and postsecondary engagement indicators
  • Establish shared language and aligned expectations across the school
Participants will leave with a practical alignment roadmap to identify strengths, address gaps, and guide intentional collaboration that prepares students for sustained success beyond graduation.

Future Ready from the Start: Get in the Game!
Monday June 15, 2026 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
What if we started preparing students for their careers the same way we prepare them for sports — by teaching the rules, practicing the skills, and building confidence early? SC Career Kids is helping schools build a strong workforce foundation by introducing career awareness in elementary school through hands on exploration, purposeful play, and meaningful conversations with community helpers and industry professionals. From statewide Safety Town programs serving PreK through 2nd grade to expanding after school Career Clubs across multiple districts, students are introduced to career pathways, essential life skills, and workplace readiness habits in developmentally appropriate ways. This session explores how early career exposure strengthens academic engagement, builds student confidence, and supports long term educational success. Participants will learn how intentional community partnerships, interactive programming, and aligned instructional strategies can integrate career awareness within existing school structures. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how early career exposure can be thoughtfully integrated within their schools and districts, and how SC Career Kids can serve as a trusted partner and resource in helping bring these experiences to life. We would never wait until high school to teach a child how to read or to compete in athletics. Career awareness should be no different. The earlier students understand the possibilities ahead of them, the stronger their educational journey becomes. The future is not waiting. It is time to get students in the game.

CTE Isn’t What It Used to Be: Redefining Career Readiness Through Innovation, Industry, and Impact
Tuesday June 16, 2026 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
For decades, Career and Technical Education (CTE) carried outdated perceptions—“vocational tracks,” limited academic rigor, and narrow post-graduation pathways. That model no longer exists. At Beaufort Jasper Academy for Career Excellence (BJACE), CTE is rigorous, industry-aligned, data-driven, and directly connected to workforce demands. Today’s CTE integrates STEM, real-world problem solving, industry certifications, work-based learning, and postsecondary partnerships to prepare students not just for jobs—but for high-wage, high-skill, high-demand careers. This session will challenge outdated assumptions about CTE and showcase how BJACE has transformed career readiness into a strategic, measurable, and future-focused system that benefits students, employers, and communities. Session DescriptionCTE has evolved from shop classes and isolated skills training into comprehensive, STEM-infused, industry-partnered pathways aligned with workforce and economic development needs. Participants will explore: How modern CTE programs align with regional labor market demands The integration of academic rigor and industry credentials The role of work-based learning and employer partnerships How career centers can serve as regional workforce engines Data-driven strategies that measure placement, certifications, and student outcomes Using BJACE as a case study, attendees will learn how one multi-district career center restructured programs to: increase industry-recognized certifications, expand work-based learning opportunities, strengthen employer partnerships, align programs with high-growth career sectors, and shift community perception about CTE. This session will provide replicable strategies that districts can implement to elevate career readiness in their own schools and regions.

Original Six Foundation - From Classroom to Career: Reimagining Afterschool for Rural Students
Tuesday June 16, 2026 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Across rural South Carolina, many students lack access to high-quality enrichment and career exposure during the critical hours after school. Yet research shows the hours immediately following the school day are pivotal for learning, safety, and long-term development.
For the past decade, the Original Six Foundation has partnered with public schools across South Carolina to deliver no-cost, educator-led afterschool programming for students in rural and under-resourced communities. What began as a small pilot has grown into a collaborative model serving more than 1,000 students annually across 13 schools, combining academic support, hands-on STEAM learning, and meaningful career exploration opportunities.
The session will begin with Original Six Foundation Executive Director Kara Gormley Meador, Program Director Nick Washington, and Program Coordinator Angelica Tyler sharing how the O6 Afterschool model is helping rural students thrive. Together, they will discuss why high-quality afterschool programming is a necessity—not a luxury—in rural communities and how strategic partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations are creating new pathways to success for students.
Participants will learn how the Original Six model has evolved over the past 10 years to connect students with professionals, workplaces, and career experiences that broaden horizons and inspire future goals. From classroom career speakers to behind-the-scenes visits at companies such as Boeing, Honda, manufacturing facilities, law firms, and colleges, O6 is helping students see what is possible long before they enter the workforce.
Following a brief presentation, Kara Gormley Meador will moderate a dynamic panel discussion featuring leaders from education, workforce development, and industry who are helping shape South Carolina's future talent pipeline. Panelists will share insights on workforce trends, career readiness, employer engagement, and the importance of exposing students to career opportunities early.
Panelists include:
  • Debbie Jones, Pee Dee Regional Workforce Advisor, South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce
  • Robert Wingard, Honda
  • Stacey McDonald, Principal, Palmetto Middle School, Marion County School District
  • Nick Washington, Original Six Foundation
Attendees will leave with practical strategies for designing nimble, responsive afterschool programming that aligns with school priorities, strengthens community partnerships, and equips students with the awareness and skills needed for future success.

Building Future-Readiness Early: Connecting K–12 Preparation to the Global Workforce
Tuesday June 16, 2026 2:15pm - 3:15pm EDT
As technological change, AI adoption, demographic shifts, and evolving workforce needs reshape the labor market, employers report that nearly 40% of core skills are expected to change by 2030. Analytical thinking, technological literacy, resilience, and global awareness are among the fastest-growing competencies. Preparing students for this future cannot begin in college alone. As South Carolina continues to strengthen its workforce pipeline, early exposure to career pathways, especially those connected to global and international industries, is critical. This session highlights a collaborative, scalable model that integrates K-12 career exploration, college readiness, and global workforce awareness into a coherent pathway from classroom to career. Drawing on initiatives from the Darla Moore School of Business’ Office of Access, Opportunity, and Community Engagement (AOCE), Office of Undergraduate Programs, and Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), the presenters will demonstrate how early exposure to structured career pathways improves motivation, academic alignment, and postsecondary outcomes. The session will feature:AOCE’s Moore Launchpad, Power Forward and other K-12 pathway programs serving South Carolina districts, which provide early business exposure, mentoring, and structured academic preparation. Documented student outcomes, including:97% admission rate for Power Forward scholars who applied to USC92% retention rate (Year 2 to Year 3) among Rising Scholars89% average completion rate across AOCE programs International and global career awareness initiatives such as the South Carolina International Career Pathways Guide (currently in late-stage development), created by CIBER, that maps global career opportunities across industries relevant to South Carolina’s economy. Practical strategies for educators and administrators to integrate career exploration into existing advising structures, college preparation programming, and classroom experiences. Participants will leave with actionable tools to help students understand not just how to prepare for college, but how their preparation connects to meaningful, future-ready careers. Learning Objectives By the end of this session, participants will be able to: Identify evidence-based strategies for embedding career exploration into K-12 college preparation models. Helping Young Children Build Skills for the Future: Connecting SC Early Learning Standards, Play, and Career Readiness
Wednesday June 17, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
South Carolina’s future workforce begins in its early childhood classrooms. This session brings together the SC Early Learning Standards, play-based instructional practices, and career readiness competencies to show how foundational learning in early childhood directly supports the future economic prosperity of South Carolina. Participants will explore how intentional play, early literacy and numeracy foundations, social-emotional development, and integrated STEM experiences lay the groundwork for later Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways and high‑demand workforce skills. This session will highlight developmentally appropriate, evidence‑informed practices that build curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and problem‑solving—skills essential for emerging industries, automation, military pathways, and future-ready careers. Through practical classroom strategies, cross-sector insights, and examples of innovative early learning environments, attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how high‑quality early learning aligns with workforce readiness and strengthens South Carolina’s long-term talent pipeline.

Beyond Tracking to Transformation: Using Palmetto Pathways to Drive Meaningful IGP Conversations in South Carolina
Wednesday June 17, 2026 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
South Carolina has built a strong foundation for tracking student progress through Palmetto Pathways. Now, the introduction of the Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) tool represents a significant step forward, shifting the work from monitoring progress to actively guiding students’ post-secondary planning. This session will begin with an overview of recent updates to Palmetto Pathways, highlighting how new features better support visibility into graduation progress, pathway completion, and postsecondary readiness. Presenters will then introduce the IGP tool as a critical next step in this work—not just as a technical enhancement, but as a tool designed to transform how counselors engage with students and families. Participants will experience a guided demonstration of the IGP tool, with a focus on how it supports more meaningful, structured planning conversations. The tool enables counselors to move beyond compliance-driven planning toward deeper engagement with students—helping them make informed decisions, set goals, and stay on track. The session will also address key implementation considerations, including the importance of clear ownership across school and district teams and the need to build systems that support both strong data practices and high-quality student interactions.

From Passion to Profession: Building Creative Career Pathways
Wednesday June 17, 2026 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
The WHY: Creative Career Studio was developed in response to a clear need: young creatives often lack access to meaningful guidance and resources that illuminate pathways to creative college majors and careers. This session explores how we are addressing that gap by helping students see the full range of possibilities for building sustainable creative careers that align personal passion with viable opportunities in South Carolina’s economy. The WHAT: Grounded in labor market data from O*NET and supported by statewide research on the economic impact of the arts, Creative Career Studio connects student interests to real-world career pathways. As part of this work, participants will explore a series of short-form videos that highlight real working creatives across sectors, including manufacturing, technical and skilled trades, and the arts, helping to broaden students’ understanding of where creativity lives in today’s workforce. Participants will engage directly with the Creative Career Studio website, experience the student-facing career quiz, and explore how the platform’s resources prepare creative students for pathways to college and career readiness. The session will also provide a deeper look at the framework behind the work, including standards alignment, instructional connections, and upcoming enhancements to keep resources relevant and engaging. The FUTURE: We will also share where the program is headed, including a preview of Creative Career Studio’s Arts Industry Connections (work-based learning field experiences) and its companion curriculum, studio kits with lesson plans available for districts and teachers to check out through Arts Commission Hubs, and a Virtual Speakers Bureau designed to offer virtual field trips that connect students with real South Carolina professionals across creative career pathways.

The Interview Advantage: Turning Practice into Opportunity with Business Partners
Wednesday June 17, 2026 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Preparing students for the workforce requires authentic experiences that parallel real hiring processes. This session will present South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind’s student participation in structured mock interviews with local business partners to build career readiness skills. Information gained from the Advisory Board meetings directed and focused our work with student preparation. Students developed professional resumes and cover letters. Then, with the assistance of their technical instructors, the students research and prepare for interview responses related to their career interests. Students completed preparation activities within their career classes, including peer interviews, teacher-led practice interviews, and analysis of interview videos to identify effective and ineffective interview behaviors. Local business and community partners conducted interviews and completed detailed evaluation rubrics before leaving the campus. These rubrics were copied and distributed to teachers, providing students with timely, meaningful feedback, while providing the administration the opportunity to track data. Students completed self-reflection rubrics after their interviews, allowing them to compare their perceptions with interviewer feedback and better understand their strengths and areas for growth. After the mock interviews, the data collection results were shared with the Advisory Board members again. Findings and new suggestions from the board will be shared and implemented into next year's Mock Interview. Participants in this session will receive practical resources, including planning guides, student preparation materials, interview rubrics, self-reflection sheets, and scheduling tools used to coordinate the event. Learning Objectives Participants will learn how to: Design and implement a schoolwide mock interview event. Partner with local businesses to create authentic career readiness experiences. Prepare students using structured pre-interview activities and classroom practice. Use interviewer rubrics and student self-reflections to provide meaningful feedback. Organize scheduling and logistics for multiple interviews in a school setting. Session Format This interactive session will walk participants through the step-by-step process used to organize and implement mock interviews. The presenter will share planning materials, student preparation resources, interview rubrics, and scheduling templates. Attendees will have time to discuss how the model can be adapted for their own schools and career readiness programs. Materials Provided Participants will receive: Mock interview planning checklist Student preparation handouts Resume and cover letter guidance materials Interview question preparation sheets Interviewer rubric templates Student self-reflection rubric Sample scheduling templates for interview day
